How do I know that I can trust God with my future husband and my career?

April 28th, 2009

It is very important to know the kind of God that we are in relationship with. If you have a belief in a mean God, who really quite enjoys kicking you down for fun, then you would be quite justified in your pursuit of happiness, and to rely on yourself to make all of your key decisions to keep this rather unpleasant god out of the picture.

A Good God

Thankfully, as Christians we don’t worship a god like this. In Jeremiah 29:11-13 God says the following to his people:

‘For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.’

There are other promises that God makes through the Bible of a similar nature, showing that he is a God who loves to bless (Psalm 86:15, 103:8, John 10:10b). When we know a friend who is caring, loving, kind and faithful we find it easier to disclose secrets to them, and to anticipate that they will do good to us in their actions. They are still human though, and will not be able to hold perfectly to the promises that they make.

God is all-powerful though, and is completely faithful to his people (Exodus 34:6), and this is most clearly seen through Jesus (1 John 1:9) who faithfully went to the cross so that we might be able to have a close intimate relationship with him first, despite the horrendous pain, torture, physically, emotionally and spiritually that he endured. Given God’s faithful nature you can put your trust in him when it comes to your future wife/husband and career.

Patience is a Virtue

This is not to say that this is always going to be something that will be given to you on a plate instantly, so don’t just sit back, do nothing and sip on your Cappucino.  God will often put desires in our heart, which are there to be pursued actively, e.g. a desire to be a teacher, and so it is right to start doing the necessary things that would qualify you to be a teacher, (GCSE’s, A’level’s, PGCE etc). If you don’t know at all, then just pray and ask God to speak to you about it, and put a desire in your heart, or speak to you through your friends & family (Proverbs 15:22).

When it comes to finding your life partner you need to weigh up if you are ready for this as God encourages us not to arouse love before we are ready (Song of Songs 8:4) and that it is good to be single for a number of reasons (See 1 Corinthians 7). I have found that personally when I have been single God has been training me up to be a good husband, by refining me and removing the parts of my personality that will not help me or my wife when I am married.

Conclusion

So in conclusion, we can know that God cares about us, and wants the best for us so that he will be glorified by our lives.  Jesus encourages us to focus on building God’s kingdom on this earth and then the other things you need will be added (Matt 6:33). God is a perfect and faithful father, and when we look at circumstances that seem unfavourable, we can know that he is still completely in control working out every situation for the good of those who love him ( Romans 8:28).
